Jesús Pobre Hermitage

INFORMATION OF INTEREST

The complex consists of two buildings: The Convent (18th Century), privately owned, and the Church (17th Century). In the exterior, the complex forms a uniform block.

The Church has a rectangular floor plan, consisting of single nave in four sections with barrel vault roof and lateral chapels which are not connected to each other. The final section forms the major chapel (last decade of 17th Century); it was built subsequent to the Church nave and has a completely different style in comparison with the temple. The interior vertical wall is laid out on Doric pilasters, whose capitals follow the same model.

The major presbytery has been designed more as a window niche than as a chapel, which was used to store the Poor Jesus image.

The Poor Jesus Image. Of these ancient images, we are only familiar with the photograph of Poor Jesus. It involves a small-scale sculpture which represents a reclining Christ made in the 18th Century.
