Route 2: Dénia - Teulada - Moraira - Benissa- Dénia

Teulada is only 22 km from Dénia.

Visits in Teulada:
We must visit the church of Santa Caterina (St. Catherine) from the 16th c., Renaissance style with gothic touches. The bell tower, with a hexagonal plan and 30 m. high, is from the 19th c. The Abbey House is in front and next to the church: the Divina Pastora church, baroque style with a Renaissance façade.

The Sala de Jurats i Justícies (Juries and Justice Hall), from the 17th c., is also in the historic centre. From here we can reach the Sant Vicent Ferrer hermitage of neo-classic baroque style.

Typical shopping:
In Teulada we can buy “Marina Alta” white wine and also Moscatell (Muscatel) sweet wine.
The open air market is held every Wednesday on Alacant Street.

Towards Moraira:
We take the road to Moraira and 2 km. away we find the Font Santa (Holy Fountain) hermitage where there is “the spring from which water never ceases to flow.”

Visits in Moraira:
It is worthwhile to visit the parochial church of la Mare de Déu dels Desamparats (Our Lady of the Forsaken) and Magatzems, Platges and Mar streets where we find el margenot (an old contention wall, which protected the houses in days of bad sea), the Castle of Moraira, the hermitage of la Mare de Déu del Carme (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel).

We must also visit Moraira’s Nautical Club.

In the del Portet beach we’ll discover the Cap d’Or watchtower. In the south-eastern slope we’ll find the Cova de la Cendra (The Cave of Ashes), an archaeological site from the upper Palaeolithic.
Market in Moraira: Fridays on the Moraira-Calp Road (next to the parking) as well as the handicraft market on summer afternoons in Madrid Avenue.

Towards Benissa:
We drive to Benissa, following signposting indications to Calp and after 5 km we reach the Benissa detour (on the right).

Sites of interest in Benissa:
The Plaça del Portal (Entrance Gate Square) with the Town Hall, Puríssima Street, a typical mediaeval street, where there are lordly mansions with latticed balconies. We pass by the Plaça de l’Església Vella (Old Church Square), the 16th c. exchange, the Monument del Riberenc (Riverside Dweller) and in front, the House of Culture, a historic small palace next to the famous Joan Vives House (where the sculpture of Benissa’s patron saint: la Puríssima Xiqueta (the Most Pure Little Girl) was found. We call your attention on Desamparats Street, the area with the mansions of the old nobility as well as the Casal dels Joves (Youth Club). We must point out the Puríssima Xiqueta church, of neo-gothic style and extraordinary proportions known locally as the “Cathedral of la Marina”.

The 17th c. Franciscan convent and the church next to the cloister are also of outstanding value.

Typical cuisine:
Putxero de polp (Octopus Stew) is the most famous Benissa dish as well as a great variety of rice dishes (arròs del senyoret (gentleman’s rice), arròs amb fesols I naps (rice with beans and turnips), mallow (melva), codfish, all types of sausages, etc.

Open air market in Benissa:
On Saturdays near the convent. Tuesday: antiques and handicraft flea market in Dolores Piera Square.

There is a beach in the district of Benissa although the town is inland.

After visiting Benissa we’ll come back to Dénia.
