Route 3: Dénia-Calp-Altea.

Transport possibilities:
Private car, boat excursion Dénia-Calp, Local FGV Train or Alsa-Enatcar Buses.

With a car:
Motorway AP-7 (exit 63) or National Road N-332 (Gata, Teulada, Benissa, Calp direction). Calp is 30 km. from Dénia.

Sites of Interest in Calp:
The Rock of Ifach, declared a National Park in 1987, 332 metres high. At the beginning of the ascent on foot, there is the Nature Classroom. From the summit the views are impressive.
Between the city of Calp and the Rock you will find the archaeological remains of the Banys de la Reina (The Queen’s Baths), the remains of a Roman villa, which was a part of the fish hatchery which, as we can check, are still in a good state of preservation.

In the historic centre we find the Torreó de la Peça (The Watchtower of the Piece) from the 14th c. although reformed in the 18th. The Town Walls are nearby (14th to 20th c.) In the walls we’ll find el forat de la mar (the sea hole) a door opened by French troops in 1813. We’ll visit the Old Church, a unique example of Gothic-Mudejar style in the Community of Valencia and the parochial church of la Mare de Déu de les Neus (Our Lady of Snows) from the 18th century, the glass window and façade of which are decorated using an attractive mosaic.

We recommend a stroll in the raval one of the old quarters, a visit to the archaeological, fiesta and collector museums and the Casa de la Senyoreta (House of the Mistress) from the 18th c. In the surroundings of the historic centre we find the Casa Cocó, a typical country house which has been turned into an Ethnologic Museum, the llavador de la font, an old fountain and washer, etc.

Sea Promenade:
Take a walk in Promenade Infanta Elena (Arenal-Bol beach) and Promenade Infanta Cristina (Llevant or de la Fossa Beach, as well as Príncep d’Astúries Promenade (at the feet of the Rock of Ifach, bordering the southern slope.)

Towards Altea:
We now go towards Altea, which is only 10 km from Calp (National Road N-332).

Visits in Altea:
We must point out the historic centre: The Portal Vell (Old Entrance Gate) will tell us we are in the walled enclosure. In Tonico Ferrer Square you’ll find the Scholter Foundation, with painting exhibitions. The Palau (Palace) shelters the World Instruments Museum. The Main Street calls your attention with its latticed balconies, its graded cobblestone floor, its typical atmosphere… leading us to the Plaça de l’Església de la Mare de Déu del Consol (Church of Our Lady of Solace Square), a welcoming corner where Our Lady’s temple is crowned by unique blue and white tiles. The Handicraft Exhibition (Mostra d’Artesania) is held from 7.30 p.m. to midnight, in summer and Holy Week, with stalls offering objects in a Bohemian atmosphere.

Next to the church we have the Mirador a lookout where from where you can enjoy some magnificent views.
Once the visit to the historic centre is over, we’ll go the Passeig de la Mediterrània (Mediterranean Promenade) where we’ll have a pleasant stroll past cafes, restaurants, shops, gardens, etc

Altea’s weekly market is held on Tuesdays near the river, in the Camí de l’Algar (Algar Way), next to the Multisports Complex.

Optional excursions around Altea:
“Villa Gadea” (UNESCO International Centre), the hamlet of Altea la Vella with its typical houses, clustered together around the church. Not far from Altea la Vella, following the Callosa d’En Sarriá Road, a path takes us to the summit of the Bèrnia Hills, the Fort of Bèrnia (ruins of an old castle), the Runar fountain and the forat (a hole crossing the rock, a natural pass to the northern area of the hills). There is a special picnic area and walking trails are common in all the area.
