Dénia, Orba, Fontilles Area, la Vall de Laguar.
From Dénia we’ll take the Ondara direction. Once in Ondara we’ll take a detour to Benidoleig. In the area of Benidoleig we’ll find the Coves de les Calaveres (Skull Caves) with stalactites and stalagmites.
On the road from Benidoleig to Orba we find some Moorish ceramic furnaces.
Sites of Interest in Orba:
Orba is divided in two historic centres: Orba and the streets of Orbeta. In the latter there are several Muslim vestiges including the Font de Dalt (Upper Fountain) and the Font de Baix (Lower Fountain)
Orba is well known for its clay and ceramics handicraft.
Fontilles Area:
From Orba we’ll take the road to Vall de Laguar2.5 km away, after passing a cave in the gully at 180º, we take an access way to the left taking us to the Barranc de Fontilles Recreational Area, at the feet of Orba’s little castle. You can see the ruins of a half demolished tower and the Cavall Verd (Green Horse), the last bastion of the Moorish rebellion of La Marina. Furthermore, both the Fontilles Sanatorium Residence and the Fountain ofFontilles (within the sanatorium next to the church) are also found here.
After that, we’ll go to Isbert Reservoir, situated half a kilometre, following that same road.
Once we have admired the landscape we continue towards the villages and sites in the Vall de Laguar: Campell, Fleix, el barranc de l’Infern (Hell’s Gully) and Benimaurell.
Sites of interest in Campell:
Church of Santa Ana (18th c.) in Santa Ana Square, at the entrance of Campell, on the left.
On the Campell-Fleix Road:
We follow the signpost on the left of the road which takes us to Campell Fountain, to the Sant Josep hermitage and the Font del Gel (Ice fountain). From the Font del Gel a walking trail leaves towards Cavall Verd, PR V-181)
Sites of interest in Fleix:
Churches of Santa Teresa and Sant Pasqual (18thc.).
Optional visit to the Barranc de l’Infern (Hell Gully) recommended for walkers with experience.
Before all, we must state that the walking trail, which runs through the Barranc de l’Infern (Hell Gully) is of a high level of difficulty. We, therefore, only recommend this route for experienced walkers and, always, in good weather conditions (forbidden on rainy days.)
Access to route PR- V 147: from Fleix we go to Benimaurell and as soon as we take this road we find Fleix Primary School, where we’ll find the Short Distance Trail PR- V147, which takes us to the gully and to the area known as les Juvees Altes i Mitges. We park near the school and start the walking trail.
The route is 14.4 km long and lasts 6 h.45 min.
The site known as the Barranc de l'Infern is impressive. In fact, it’s known as the”walking trail cathedral”. The landscape is spectacular and the route runs through graded zigzags (old cobble stone way with 6.873 steps), passing by old washers and fountains such as the llavador and Font Grossa to the Font del Reinós and the Font dels Olbis –recreational area- . The area of Les Juvees is of great interest: small country farmhouses sprinkle the landscape and the beauty of the northern area of the valley is unquestionable. It is a circular route eniding where it began in Fleix.
Scaling is practiced in the area of the Barranc de l’Infern.
Another high level of difficulty walking trail (length 25 km and approximately 11 hours) is the walking trail PR V-181. There is a link with PR V-181 at the beginning of PR- 147.
Towards Benimaurell:
We’ll drive to Benimaurell. On the way we can visit the Font del Camusot (fountain).
Sites of Interest in Benimaurell:
Church of Saints Cosme and Damià, in Sacrament Square, also from the 18th c. In Benimaurell’s district we’ll find the fountain known as the Font dels Olbis.
In these three districts (Campell, Fleix and Benimaurell) traditional llavadors (washers) call our attention as well as the welcoming narrow streets.
Optional walking trails:
Those that run through the Collao and Cavall Verd sierras. In Cavall Verd sierra we find the fountain known as Font del Penyó.
Once we have visited Benimaurell we’ll come back to Dénia. Return by Orba, 8 km away, Benidoleig, Ondara and Dénia. |
