Dénia- Gata de Gorgos- Llíber – Jalón – Alcalalí – Parcent - Castell de Castells- Benigembla- Murla –Dénia.

From Dénia we go towards Ondara and take the N-332 National Road, direction Alacant (Alicante), until we reach Gata.

Sites of Interest in Gata:
We must point out the town’s osier handicraft: in Marina Alta Avenue and Plaça d’Espanya we find a lot of shops with objects in osier, palm and cane. Other handicraft activities include bobbin lace and guitar manufacturing, ceramics, leather, etc. In the centre of Gata we’ll find the parochial church dedicated to Sant Miquel Arcàngel (17th c.) from which we can visit the historic centre.

Sites of interest in Llíber:
In the centre of Llíber we visit the parochial church of Sant Cosme and Damià (neoclassical style), in the neighbourhood the promenade known as the Passeig del Calvari...

Sites of interest in Xaló:

In the centre of Xaló we visit the church of Santa Maria (neoclassical style). In front of the antiques flea market (Saturday morning) we find the hermitage of Saint Domingo Guzmán and next to it the Xaló Ethnologic Museum.
Xaló and Alcalalí are two traditional parada i fonda villages (with facilities to eat and spend the night). There is a great sausage and dessert manufacturing tradition.

On the Xaló-Alcalalí Road:

We find the Cooperative Cellars Virgen Pobre (Poor Virgin), where we can buy dry fruits, wine and local olive oil. On this road there are several cellars, which also produce and sell local wine.

Sites of Interest in Alcalalí:

The visit to the Town Hall Square (Plaça de l’Ajuntament) is a must with the parochial church of the Nativity of Our Lady (Nativitat) from the 18th c. with a parochial museum inside. On this square we’ll find the village’s most emblematic monument: the Lord’s Tower 16th c.), the see of the Museum of Dry Raisin (Museu de la Pansa) and a lookout to the valley.
In the village’s surroundings we find the hermitages of the Mare de Déu del Calvari (Our Lady of Calvary) and the hermitage of Sant Joan Mosquera. Bobbin lace and crotchet work are still very much alive in this village.

Sites of Interest in Parcent:
We can carry out a quiet and peaceful walk visiting the parochial church of the Puríssima Concepció (Most Pure Conception), with its unique bell tower, the house in which the writer Gabriel Miró lived, where he wrote his book “del vivir” (“of living”) and the washer fountain, near the river.
If we follow the winding Coll de Rates road, before the village of Tàrbena, we see a detour to Castell de Castells, 500 metres before reaching the village we’ll find the site known as the Font de la Bota (Boot Fountain) and, on the left, the recreational area with games for the children. From here, the walking trail leaves for the Penya Castellet, where we’ll find the ruins of a Muslim castle. The route is perfectly signposted.

Sites of Interest in Castell de Castells:
The parochial church of Santa Anna (17th c.), the historic centre, el Ethnologic Museum and the Macro schematic or Rock Art Museum, which is situated in an old nobleman’s mansion over 200 years old, situated in Sant Roc Street.
A visit to Pla de Petracos: From Castell de Castells, following the road to Benigembla, on the left bank, we find the detour to Pla de Petracos, declared WORLD HERITAGE since it is unique in its kind (made up of prehistoric painting of great abstraction known as micro schematic) and one of the best rock art sites in the Valencian Community.
It is signposted. We have to park and ascend the path which leads us to it. Although direct access is not possible (there are protecting fences to ensure preservation) we can watch the site from outside This site is 7.000 years old and it includes 8 shelters, 5 of which have perfectly visible painted scenes. The site was originally a sanctuary.
Once we’ve seen it, we follow the road and we’ll pass the “plains of Petracos”, an area where the Battle of the Plain of Petraco, between Moors and Christians, took place at the time of the expulsion of the Moors.

Towards Benigembla:
Once we’ve finished the Pla de Petracos route we’ll take the road from Castell de Castells a Benigembla, where there isa Pure Olive Oil Cooperative right in the centre of the village.

Sites of Interest in Benigembla:
We can visit the Sant Josep parochial church (neoclassical). There is a 3 metre high wall built to protect the village from the river’s incursions. Furthermore, we find the site known as the Font del Llavador (Washer Fountain), a recreational area and several fountains, as well as several caves; cova de l’Hedrera, coves de laCistella and the Cova Roja.
