Baix la Mar Quarter (Down by the Sea Quarter)
It is Dénia’s fishermen quarter. Its town planning dates from the 16th c. with a period of great growth in the 18th and 19th c. when it was fully defined.
The quarter has no monumental buildings and the only outstanding building is les Drassanes or Old Shipyards dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, of great sobriety and with interesting basket-handle arches made of tuff. There now is a hotel in this building.
The Baix la Mar quarter is a very interesting architectonic collection, which has the typical characteristics of Mediterranean fishing quarters. You must visit the Pati de la Creu (Plaçeta dela Creu or the Small Cross Square), Sant Antoni Square, Sant Vicent and Pont Street and the Bellavista Esplanade, where the quarter’s original flavour is at its best. |

Les Roques Quarter
Built throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, there are no noteworthy monumental buildings but we must point out the collection of popular Mediterranean, whitewashed and simple architecture recommending a visit to the following streets: Hospital, Sant Francesc, Sant Cristòfol, Guant and Salt.
The Muslim medina or town was located in this area.
This quarter is in the surrounding of the castle its narrow and low rise houses give it a special flavour. |

Cavallers,Major and neighbouring streets
Cavallers, Major, Sant Josep and Loreto streets still preserve an interesting collection of houses built in the late 18th c. and throughout the 19th c. in connection to the golden age and the bourgeoisie that arose due to the dry raisin trade.
The Ethnological Museum, the Convent building and the church of Our Lady of Loreto are all in this quarter. |
