Route 5: LES ROTES- GERRO TOWER- SAN ANTONIO's CAPE volver

Route at the eastern end of the Montgó Natural Park.

Route for people initiated in Nordic Walking, leaving from Las Rotas in Denia, will take us to Cabo de San Antonio.

We start our route from the Les Rotes cetacean viewpoint, from there we will go to the Torre del Gerro, to reach the highest part of the route. Our next point of reference will be "Els Molins de Les Planes" and from there the recreational area and the lighthouse of Cape San Antonio.

Torre del Gerro, a defensive watchtower from the 16th century.

This tower, 13.5 m high, is part of the network of fortifications erected along the coast in the 16th century to prevent constant incursions by Berber pirates.

The circular truncated-cone shaped tower has two superimposed bodies, with the lower one acting as a buttress for the structure.

The access door to its interior is raised from the base. Two matacans defend the access door. The coat of arms of Charles V stands out, with four bars, the crown of the former Kingdom of Valencia and the two-headed eagle of the Austrians. Inside, the different levels are connected by an opening, which can be accessed by a moving staircase or a simple rope.

There is evidence of another tower located in the current Sant Antoni lighthouse, in addition to the Almadrava tower. The towers had visual communication, although they also used other means, such as signs with mirrors, fire, etc. They had guards who took care of them, as well as possible transfers to other towers or citadels to watch for any danger.

Its name comes from its curious form of "gerro"(jarrón/vase).

Els Molins de les Planes.

The mills of "Les Planes" have reigned over this viewpoint since the first construction in the 14th century. It was followed years later by another ten towers, the remains of which, now without blades or cover, can still be seen in this unique corner of the coast, although in different levels of conservation. Mills that had to take over the "llebeig", the southwest wind that almost constantly blows on the Trencall de la Plana. The mills, now in disuse, incorporated robust mechanisms made of holm oak that moved the heavy circular stone grinding wheels.

Recreational Area of Cape San Antonio.
